Samuel Edington House. Mom’s great – great grandfather, Samuel Edington bought around 1200 acres in Monroe County in the1820s. He was a plantation owner, farmer, justice of the peace, and a well known breeder of fine horses and cattle. He built the brick family home in the late1830s. The bricks are believed to have been made on his land by slaves. He called the house “Cherry Palace”, but it was later called the “Henley House”. He and his wife raised their two daughters, Mary Ann (mom’s great-grandmother) and Eliza Jane, at the house. Both Mary Ann and Eliza Jane were married in the house. Samuel spent this rest of his life in the house and later gave the house to his daughter, Eliza Jane Edington Henley, and her husband. When mom’s great- grandmother, Mary Ann Edington Henley, died at a fairly young age, her young children (including mom’s grandmother Maggie Henley Hall) were raised by their Aunt Eliza Jane in the family home. Mom’s Grandmother, Maggie Henley Hall, grew up at the House and was later married there along with her twin sister in a dual ceremony in 1894. One of the rooms was called the “bride’s room” because all the names of the brides who spent their wedding nights in the house were written on the wall by the mantle. Eliza Jane’s children inherited the house and farm and later rented it out before finally selling it in the 1930s. The house is still in existence. It is at 525 Cold Stream Farm Road in the community of New Hope near Madisonville. It is still a working farm called "Cold Stream Farm". The family cemetery can also still be found on this property. It is on the hill above the New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Jerry Lay and Carolina Kittrell live there as of 1999.
